"14th August 2016 U9 Good Sports Derby 2016 The weather was kind enough to us this year to allow us perfect conditions to play our inaugural U9 Good Sports Derby. The theme of the event was based on sportsmanship, participating fairly and respecting the rules and all those involved in the game. Two young clubs met today, all players, parents, coaches and volunteers all belong to a team, those teams are part of a club, those clubs are members of Football Federation Victoria and ultimately part of Football Family Australia. The message we all want to get across early is that the game that we love has rules put in place by its governing body for the good of our game and as participants, spectators and volunteers we must always respect the decisions made by the authorities put in place to enforce the rules of the game. The 8 games played today we're all controlled by 3 junior referees who all play the game and know the rules very well, Cameron, Ilan and Jamie did an excellent job in making decisions and controlling the games and gained the valuable experience of how difficult it can be to be a referee and will have admiration and respect for referees in the future having done some time in their boots. Game 1 Waverley Victory 1 Mazenod Black nil A great game by Mazenod Black who have recently moved up from U8s to U9 Joey's, they played like wallabies in this game, there were some great defensive saves made by Mattia and William. In the end the pressure from Waverley Victory was too great with some nice footwork from Samuel and Lukas finally broke the deadlock in the second half when he found the back of the net. Game 2 Mazenod Blue 2 Mazenod White 1 A closely fought battle with some end to end play until Paul made a run to the box then faked a strike to give him enough time to tap the ball into a bit more space to crack it past the keeper. Early in the second half Amelia made a run into the box to get on the end of a cross in from Luka to put the Blue team 2 in front, White struck back with a goal, Alfie made a nice weaving run and got a shot on target, but it was fisted away by Marcel. Game 3 Mazenod Blue 1 Waverley Victory nil A really entertaining game there were great skills showed from both teams, Cohen showed some fancy footwork by controlling the ball in tight spaces and using his fast feet to nutmeg his way into space. Paul hit the near post 2 minutes in,Amelia was solid at the back managing to cut out passes which would have left Victory attackers 1 on 1 with the keeper. Luka finally broke the deadlock by netting one. Game 4 Mazenod Black 1 Mazenod White 4 Mazenod White came out firing on all cylinders this game they managed to put 4 in the back of the net. James made a ripping save from a strike destined for the top corner. Daniel put one in for the Black. Tyson had an outstanding second half as keeper. Game 5 Waverley Victory 3 Mazenod White nil This game was a tense struggle to begin, both teams contesting fiercely to get their nose in front, Samuel made some great plays working the ball up the line and put the first goal in to give Victory the lead, Yanni struck a cracking goal into the top corner to go 2 goals up then Cohen put another in to make it a certainty. 14th August 2016 Game 6 Mazenod Blue 3 Mazenod Black nil Blue were applying early pressure and got an early breakthrough when Luka put one in. Nick was working hard as goalkeeper and doing a great job denying the ball from making its way past him until Luka hit a volley, he had no room to hit it through with pace so he hit a lob over the top and it entered the goalmouth just centimetres under the bar, as high as Nick could jump it was just unreachable. Paul put another away early in the second half when he used his pace to run at the box, the quality of the finish was superb, showing good composure he ran at the far post to drag defenders wide and tucked it away at the vacant post. Daniel did a great job keeping in the second half, coming off his line to clear the ball out. Final 3v4 Mazenod White 2 Mazenod Black nil Mazenod Black were playing a lot better and keeping formation they really pushed the White team by getting their shoulders in front and using their bodies well to get to and defend the ball, their composure was really good and controlling the ball and scanning for options was better, the White team got up in the end with a couple of cracking goals. Final 1v2 Mazenod Blue nil Waverley Victory 2 With the Blue team topping the table with 3 wins in the group games and sitting on 9 points and Victory after its 2 wins in second place with 6 points it was time for the final, the Blue team went into the game red hot favourites showing desire and determination to follow through, but Victory had equally as much desire and determination to win. The game again was a hard fought contest with both teams shutting down any open space quickly the game became a bit of a scrimmage at times, but these kids have earned their stripes playing out of tight situations, there was a tense moment at the back for the Blue when Paul stood on the ball and went down but they scrambled it out, Luka nearly broke the deadlock when he got clear enough to take a shot but caught the side netting. Cohen was everywhere for Victory and Lukas finally got one in to put Victory up. Cohen scored again to take a 2 goal lead, the Blue team showed great fighting spirit and made a couple more good build up plays but couldn't find the back of the net then Cam blew the whistle to end the game. Waverley Victory won the event and were very happy with their performance, but all teams competed admirably, all teams have improved and the skill level of each player on the pitch is a joy to watch. The team spirit of each team who played today was great and that's what great teams are made of. Regardless of the results the most important thing that any individual player and team can take from any game is experience and with each experience it opens the door wide enough to shed light on a whole new part of the game, results really don't matter at this stage it's more about the process. Be present and enjoy every moment of the football journey because that's the best result any player can achieve and share that with your team."
